Scary parts of kid movies

I got to thinking the other day, while my kids were watching "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", of all the really creepy or spooky parts in children's shows and I started to make a mental list of what I considered really spooky parts of movies. I also asked my kids and they contributed some also. Here is a list of what I can remember.

  • The flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz
  • The Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • The boat ride in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • The drunk dream in Dumbo
  • The hyenas in Ricky (wife's entry)
  • The 'Bominable Snow man in Rudolf the Red Nosed Raindeer
  • The Ghost of Christmas Future in A Christmas Carol

Well, that's like I said, a partial list. I'm sure you can think of more. I just find it fastinating just what spooks a kid when grown up don't even realize it's happening.

The rabid animal in "Old Yeller". Marley in
"A Christmas Carol" , The blackbirds in "The Birds". An episode of "The Twilight Zone" where in the Earth went crazy and became really hot, Then it went really cold. The Pirate attacks on "The Swiss Family Robinson". The near drowning of Shelly Winters in "The Posiden Adventure". The hunting down and killing of Bambi's mother in "Bambi' too name a few.

Ursala in the Little Mermaid, Snow White's death, Scar and the Hyenas in the Loin King. Just to add a few.

My kids were terrified by the "heffalumps and woozles" in Winnie the Pooh, and I had nightmares for years even into college about the transformation scene in the original Nutty Professor with Jerry Lewis.

Lot's of parts in Fantasia, specifically "Rite of Spring" and "A Night on Bald Mountain." I would always skip that last one. WAAAAY to creepy.

heffalumps and Woozles... heffalumps and woozles!

I was also pretty scared of "Night on Bald Mountain" from Fantasia and my friends and I loved the super freaky clay-mationed "Large Marge" scene from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Does Sparky still like dragons?

If Night on Bald Mountain was too freaky for Ash( who was watching Godzilla and Jurassic Park at 3 years old) then it is too freaky for any kid. Ever. :)

I'm not sure of Sparky's taste for dragons but he does lean toward military dress and gear just now.
