McKay Coppins writes a blog for Mormon times and he recently wrote one intitled "the Glenn Beck problem". This is my e-mail to him in response.
Mr. Coppins,
I read with interest your blog about Mr. Beck. I would like to ask if in your busy day you have the time to listen to Mr. Beck or you are simply going by what others have told you. I listen to Mr. Beck when driving home from work and have found that he doesn't use "hateful rhetoric", "fear-mongering", "conspiracy theorizing", nor is he a "dangerous" or "radical fringe" unless you classify someone who wants to return the government of the United States to the limits that are set forth in the Constitution as such. Mr. Beck is at his center an entertainer and will try to get his point across in an entertaining way. Perhaps people "under 40" haven't learned the subtleties of sarcasm and irony and are there for offended by what Mr. Beck says. If trying to inspire the people of this country to have honor, integrity and honesty offends. If asking people to stand up for what they fundamentally believe in is radical. If promoting Faith, Hope, and Charity bothers you and your fellow "young Mormons". Then I would submit to you that perhaps there needs to be offense taken. I have heard it said that many people try to please God while not offending Satan. While I'm not suggesting that you or any "young Mormons" are sinning by opposing Mr. Beck I would humbly submit that perhaps you (the collective you) may want to listen to Mr. Beck and those who think as he does with more of an open mind and perhaps he will appear less of a hate-monger and may indeed have a point. I know that controversy makes for good ratings but so will trying to speak truth (as a glance at Mr. Becks ratings will show). Try not to ride other peoples coat tails to popularity.
With respects

I myself believe that Glenn Beck is inspired of God. In fact I believe that he was placed on this Earth at this time to do exactly what he is doing. I have found nothing hateful in his speech. I have also found that he speaks nothing but the truth. He also speaks nothing contrary to what the Prophet and General Authorities tell us.
Great reply! I agree 100%! Glen Beck strikes me as one of the truly noble and great ones! He's continuing to defend truth and the Constitution under difficult circumstances and in many cases his life is in actual danger from angry radicals. Mormon's would do well to examine what he says for any departure from the gospel, but he is doing a great service. Under examination his convictions are extremely closely aligned to gospel principles.
