April Flurries...

Well, you were probably wanting more pictures of 'Leenie so her you go.

A few weeks back the Elders Quorum Presidency decided that they should have a party and that party should be an "Elderwood Derby" (OK, I'm in the presidency and I suggested the derby). Well, the rules are a bit different than your usual pinewood derby, they are as follows:
  • No fire! (rockets, etc.)

  • No compressed air

  • Must fit on the track

  • Must start by the regular gate

  • Must be no more than 10 pounds

I have been working on my own car at work and you see the plans here. It is made from stainless steel and weights about five pounds but I may hollow out the bottom and pour in some lead to make it a bit heavier.

My boys are getting into the spirit also and Sparky had made his own car with G-man's help. I will try to get a good set of wheels on it and bring it up to regular PWD specks so he can run it in the regular class. G-man is making his own car but I haven't seen it yet. He says that it will be a jeep type car. Linc and Holl are a bit involved in track along with Wife and may not feel like making a car.

Speaking of track Linc is heading down to Library Ninja's area to a track meet Saturday. I'm not completely sure which school but is LN is interested I'm sure that sort of thing could be found out. Wife and Holl have a meet here so we won't be able to get down there to watch Linc's. If you get the home town gossip rag you may notice Linc mentioned in the track article. It's strange that he did better in the JV meet than the varsity meet but he gets a mention for the varsity and not the JV. I guess that's how it is. No one seems to give a poop about JV even if they do better than varsity.

About that, Linc isn't so sure he wants to play round ball again. Mostly because of the coach and also he (Linc) doesn't think he is all that good at it (he is). I certainly won't push him either way but he is on the edge of being very good at basketball. The problem is it isn't his whole life and everyone around him (except his family) is saying that it should be. The coach was in his first year and is under lots of pressure to win because we have moved up a division. He says that he wants backetball players not kids who play basketball. Everyone (except us) thinks basketball should be a year round sport and should be practiced year round but Linc just likes doing athletics of all kinds (I think his favorite is track). There is quite a few months until b.ball starts again (officially) so Linc may change his mind by then.

That is the trouble with sports in general, one is supposed to live, breathe and eat the particular sport involved. I always thought that sports were for fun and exercise, not the be all to end all. It is better to be able to enjoy all kinds of recreation, than to be obsessed with one particular one. I agree with your family's idea of it. I have never particularly liked sports because of that very reason. It has to be an obsession, and you have to be very good at it or forget it. It is called recreation because it is supposed to be fun and healthy, but society is so screwed up, that potential players that just like the exercise and sociality of sports are out of luck.

I can see Linc's point. He is as burned out as the other players. I hear the coach has been asked to leave, so next year might be better or it might be worse. Linc should follow his heart, but he is, in fact, a very very good bball player.
